It seems that flexible displays could reach the consumer sooner than expected. Science fiction films have always shown screens that fold, bend and even wrinkle, have transparency, 3D, and are as thin as a sheet.
We have always suspected that take decades to see that kind of screens in the devices we use in our day to day, but it seems that Samsung wants to advance the arrival of what looks like magic. And like many of you know, Samsung is the one who provides the screens of your Apple devices
It is assumed that Samsung might have created a flexible display based on AMOLED technology, and will soon reach the first devices in South Korea to start testing their strength and reliability with real users.
Samsung has announced more details of this new type of screen, but has released an interesting video that shows the potential of this new technology. Although it is only a proof of concept and not a video of a real flexible display performance, suggests some of the features we can expect in the short to medium term.
For starters, the touch screen would be, obviously. The device does not have room for buttons or hard edges. Additionally, the display would be transparent or opaque depending on the application that we launched. For example, to use the camera or augmented reality apps would pass the information embedded seamlessly with the elements of interest. An interesting example is the simultaneous translation of conversations between two people in a restaurant menu.
At the end of the video also shows a very convincing 3D without glasses. The three-dimensional technology is maturing and appears to be settling into our lives over the next few years, so it is not so farfetched. To see for yourselves what is best to see the video.
I do not know you, but I think something that can lead to devices other than smartphones and tablet, or even a fusion of both. Being flexible, who knows if we can expand and shrink the screen at will. Can you imagine an iPhone that turns into iPad just stretch?
Obviously, no one knows anything about release dates and probably the first prototypes are not as spectacular, but do not be surprised to start seeing something similar in the near future, although not as close as the iPhone 3 ...
