One of the great attractions created by Apple ecosystem around iOS and products like iPad , iPhone and iPod touch is that all devices are updated simultaneously. It is clear that products are becoming obsolete and are not always compatible with the latest generations of iOS, but they support do receive the update at the same time and need not wait for a phone operator will accept or similar.
Until December of this year, Apple has sold 500 million iOS devices between iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Of these devices, many are no longer in use, but still exist in circulation over 300 million devices that have been upgraded to the latest version of iOS available in just five months after its release. This figure represents 60% of all devices, although in reality the percentage will be higher operating devices. It is true that there are still outstanding devices with older versions, but in most cases are not updated due to lack of initiative of the owner and not because it is not possible due to lack of new operating system version.
These figures were announced by Phil Schiller himself, global marketing director of Apple few hours ago, did exactly what the press release announcing the new iPad Retina with 128GB capacity .
The fragmentation of Android, much wilder than iOS
For the issue of Android OS fragmentation is really alarming. According to the data handled by Google, only 9% of Android devices has been updated to Jelly Bean, the latest operating system available, version 4.1. Even more alarming to know that 47.6% of users still using the Gingerbread version, version 2.3 which hit the market in December 2010.
No doubt this is a big problem for users as the Android device manufacturers do not release updates to the latest versions as fast as you would expect (and in many cases, do not even get the update the device still being sufficiently powerful enough to run higher). But the problem is even greater for application developers, which have to be able to create applications for devices with outdated versions of the operating system, but also for the latest. And this regardless of the great fragmentation in terms of screen resolution, power and other technical aspects that greatly influence Android when running applications.
