Apple's latest smartphone, the iPhone 5 , has its aluminum back cover. Although classical test materials in their products is common in the apple company, a recent report warns that they are collecting supplies carbon fiber, with the idea of using it in a mysterious future project.
Apple is supposed to have been asked to send large quantities of this material, much higher than what would need to do some testing. Imagine a new iOS device, lighter than today, and that is grated less easily than the materials that are used now.
The carbon fiber production in Japan began in March of this year, and we have heard the news by Macotakara, which carries the track following him since. Moreover, a recent patent suggests that Apple might be researching modern uses of this material for their devices.
What's more, in April 2011 Apple hired engineer Kevin Kenney, specializes in designing carbon fiber bikes. On joining the department of materials, formalizing a relationship in which he had been acting as an external consultant for years.
Carbon fiber is a composite fiber of about 5 to 10 micrometers in diameter, consisting mostly of carbon atoms linked to form crystals. This way, you get a strong and resilient materials. To provide greater versatility, usually combined with other materials to form a composite.
Its main properties are the twists and temperature tolerance, low weight and corrosion resistance, and low thermal expansion. Do you think that someday we will see an iPad with these features?
