Apple has filed a new standard to make a SIM card even smaller than the micro-SIM iPhone currently uses the 4 or the iPad. For now, this standard already has the approval of some operators such as Orange so if you end up accepting, perhaps the next year and terminals begin to see it implemented.
With this new standard could expect to save even more space inside the terminal resulting in thinner devices or space to accommodate more hardware (more battery, for example), moreover, this solution is the closest to the idea that Apple had to make an iPhone with the SIM card already integrated.
