Apple has patented a new USB cable for connecting mobile devices. This is a non-metallic ribbon cable, would also have an LED that can display information about synchronization, etc. The only problem is that would be more expensive than today.
It appears that Apple continues to ignore European law which requires that there is a universal charger, adapter and probably will release a point.
