It seems that Samsung is affecting Apple slowly. Not content with beating Apple and Nokia as the largest supplier of mobile phones in the world during the last quarter Samsung has sold twice as many smartphones as Apple.
Driven by the great success of its latest smartphone, the Galaxy S III, Samsung has managed to increase its share of smartphones worldwide, while Apple has dropped. The current iPhone refresh cycle is becoming the Achilles heel of Apple.
Apple reported sales of 26 million iPhones in the last quarter, with a rough estimate of a loss of 3 million units due to the next update of the iPhone ( iPhone 5 ) to arrive in September or October.
The numbers are not official Samsung, because Samsung stopped disseminating both smartphone units sold as tablets for competitive reasons, but we are confident in the estimates. In addition, Samsung numbers refer to shipments made by the company, while Apple are units sold.
According to research firm IDC, Apple's market share went from 18.8% the same quarter last year to 16.9% has earned this year. During the same period, Samsung worldwide nearly doubled its share in smartphones from 17% to 32.6%. Only in this quarter is estimated that sales of the Galaxy S III have reached 6.8 million units sold.
Here is the table published by IDC
IDC said Samsung's strategy:
"Samsung has a strategy that dominates the creation of many models to cover all market segments. Apple, in contrast, provides a small number of models and all high end.
Although both companies have expanded their geographical presence in the pursuit of market share, the two companies will inevitably enter into a major conflict, as both try to generate additional revenue. "
Here you have a comparison of market share smartphone vendors this quarter:
IDC figures are a mirror of the figures from Juniper Research, which noted that Apple iPhone would launch a bigger and create something new from the magnitude of Siri to compete with such a huge success it had achieved the Galaxy S III.
Samsung reported in the last quarter sales level of 5,900 million, with net profit of 4,600 million dollars, half of the useful benefits reported by Apple, reaching the figure of 8,800 million dollars, but including sale of all its products, including iPod and Mac
Together, Apple and Samsung, represent more than half of smartphone sales worldwide and up to 80% of the profits of the mobile phone industry.
Given that 60% of profits come from Samsung smartphones and relationships with cell components, we could say that Galaxy range is quite an undertaking by itself. Similarly we could also consider the iPhone the same way as Apple is almost 60% of their profits.
Part of the blame for that Samsung has outdone Apple in this last quarter has the renewal cycle following the Cupertino with your device. The volume of shipments of iPhone is traditionally higher in the first two quarters after launch, but this time Apple has suffered a decline from quarter to quarter just six months after the launch of its latest iPhone.
Maybe Apple should step up its cycle of renewal and conduct two annual renewals of the iPhone instead of a introducing a major renovation, and one with a lower renewal 6 months later.
What would seem that Apple will launch two versions of iPhone every year?
